Canadian singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes has an undeniable allure.
The Grammy Award-nominated musician has garnered a legion of fans who are eager to follow his every move, from his chart-topping music to his cool onstage and offstage style.
Mendes lends that ‘it’ element to the latest campaign for American luxury jewelry brand David Yurman, which sees him star alongside actor Scarlett Johansson for the New York-headquartered brand. Titled Nature’s Artistry, the inspiration point for the jewelry collection, Mendes says, couldn’t be a better fit.
“Nature has always inspired me — it’s where I first retreat when I feel depleted, and where I go when I’m creating music,” he says.
In honour of the new campaign, Mendes answered a few questions for Postmedia News to provide a peek into his personal style, his take on the power of jewelry and his favourite pieces:
Q: How would you describe your personal style?
A: Authentic and comfortable, just pieces that make me feel like me. Sometimes more elevated, depending on where I’m going. But I always make sure I feel like myself.
Q: How has your style evolved in recent years?
A: I’ve become very aware of where things are sourced from, always trying to make a conscious effort to make smart choices when thinking sustainably while still being me. Definitely wear way more vintage in recent years.
Q: Are there any go-to jewelry pieces that you wear on repeat?
A: Yes! I wear the emerald David Yurman pendant. I’ve worn it for a couple of years. I also wear rings given to me by people I love.
Q: If you had to choose one piece of jewelry to wear every day for, well, forever, which would it be and why?
A: Probably my grandfather’s ring! I feel very connected to him and it.
Q: Do you think the options for men’s jewelry are evolving? If so, what do you think is driving this evolution?
A: Definitely. I think more people are starting to understand that jewelry is a way to express themselves. It seems it’s becoming more common for people to have fun with experimenting with self-expression in what they wear, and I love it. Something about jewelry allows you to really understand a person.
Q: Lastly, what made David Yurman a good fit for you to partner with for this new campaign?
A: I want to wear jewelry that feels special, authentic and sometimes elevated. David Yurman has this super-organic feel to it where you can feel dressed-up and still feel yourself.
